The Special Book Award of China is a national-level award established by the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television of China, in recognition of foreign writers, translators and publishers for their long-term contributions to introducing, translating and publishing Chinese books to promote cultural exchanges. So far, a total of eighty-eight writers, translators and publishers from more than forty countries have received the award since 2005, the year the award was established. From 2011 onward, the award has been given on an annual basis and carries with it a bonus of 150,000 yuan per winner and 50,000 per youth winner. The awarding ceremony is held annually at the Great Hall of the People on the eve of the opening day of the Beijing International Book Fair.

Liu Yandong, Vice-Premier of China, has attended the awarding ceremony to congratulate the recipients for six consecutive years up to now. The winner gets a certificate of honor, a trophy and a reward in recognition of their contributions.

Vice-Premier Liu Yandong awarded nineteen foreign experts at the 10th Special Book Award of China at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on August 23, 2016. At the ceremony, Liu remarked that the experts had made long-term commitments to writing, translating and publishing books about China and were playing an important role in introducing China to the world. The Chinese government always supports exchanges among different civilizations, said Liu.

She also expressed hopes that foreign experts could further study the essence of Chinese civilization, and translate and introduce to the outside world China’s excellent achievements to tell China’s stories, build bridges of understanding between different cultures, and present a comprehensive and true picture of China.

The winners of this year – five writers, five publishers, six translators and four young publishers from America, Hungary, India, Britain, Bulgaria, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, France, Czech, Germany, Spain, Albania, Lebanon, Ukraine and Poland – will be awarded at the ceremony of the 11th Special Book Award of China at the Great Hall of the People on August 22.
